The Breast Reduction Procedure
There are various techniques used for breast reduction surgery. What they all have in common is that fat and glandular tissue are removed from the breast. The difference lies in the incision. We always decide which method to use for breast reduction surgery during a personal consultation beforehand. The goal is to minimize scarring as much as possible.
Breast Reduction Using the T-Method
If the T-method is chosen, the incision is made around the areola. The incision then runs vertically from the nipple down to the inframammary fold. An additional incision is made in the inframammary fold. This creates a T-shaped incision. After the breast tissue is removed, the nipple is repositioned higher on the breast, and the wound is sutured.
Breast reduction using the T-method is particularly suitable for very large or significantly sagging breasts.
Breast Reduction Using the I-Technique
If the breast is to be reduced only slightly—by up to 500 grams—and there is also a significant amount of excess skin, the I-incision technique is usually chosen. In this procedure, the incision is made around the nipple and vertically downward to the nipple. Once the tissue has been removed, the skin is tightened. This results in minimal scarring.
Breast Reduction with an L-Incision
Similar to the I-incision technique, the incision is first made vertically downward. As with the T-incision, a horizontal incision is then made in the breast fold. Because this incision is not made on both sides as with the T-incision, the incision is smaller and results in less scarring.
Circular Tightening, also known as the O-incision technique
In the O-incision technique, the incision is made solely around the nipple. This method of breast reduction is suitable only when there is very little excess skin and the breast reduction is to be minimal. Tissue is removed through the resulting incision in the same way as with other breast reduction techniques.
